process - keeton and joseph 6 degrees project.

We started out with several different concepts:

and after a good deal of critical thinking, and going to the chunkyard filled with ollllld icky cars, and almost spending 20 dollars on two shitty old pipes, we decided on our gas pump idea.

needless to say we took almost a thousand photos and made at least 6 trips to the gas station in order to get the right composition. i wont bother to show all of those on here.

We edited the images in photoshop - simply by using the clone tool. for the buttons. then adding text on top of that.

project 4 process

specifics for this project can be viewed here:
http://www.thenewprogramme.net/coursematerials/i_project4.pdf

I was instructed to find four books having to do with my icon system. I would redesign a book cover four these four books as series. Because my icon system was "On The Alps" I had decided to do four novels from four countries that span across the Alpine region in Central Europe.

In the spirit of my icon system - which manifest themselves with rusticated and organic attributes - I decided to choose an old (20th/19th century), authentic, and famous novel. t After doing much research I had decided that these novels would be directed toward young adults. Each novel would have something to do with the alps.

So i decided on

I promosi sposi (the betrothed) (Italian)
Heidi (swiss)
Das Dopelte Lotchen (the double lottie) (Germany)
Belle et Sebastien (france)

I make a point of doing all of my initial brainstorming with pen and paper:

______
It helped me to brainstorm by finally jumping right in and thinking about how to digitize these things, and what images i would use from the COLLECTION OF IMAGES that I had acquired specifically for this project:

____
Eventually I came up with a way to incorporate my icon, and alpine theme and the characters with a cohesive idea:

I was able to get a lot of insight at critique - and come up with helpful information:

____
In these designs I had established a time (with rusticated look) a place (with inclusion of mountain icon) and characters (with the silhouettes). BUT i need to find one more layer of information that will foreshadow some important event in the story - or somehow speak to the feelings or thoughts that the story itself invokes.

I plan to trace silhouettes from the figures of each image of the cover from each book- its original publication.

PROJECT 3 process (PART 3)

I THEN TOOK PHOTOS OF FOR EACH IMAGE. these are the ones that I proposed at the mid process crit:

.It soon became clear that my images were not communicating well enough - some were to ambiguous and they didn't work well together as a set.

A solution that I decided upon therefore was to introduce the apposing vice for each virtue that I was thus far trying to communicate. Sooooo I came up with some thumbnails:

Here's the link for the virtues and their apposing vices:

And finally my final photos (REFFER TO LATER POST: PROJECT 3 FINAL IMAGES)

_____

I learned in this project more than ever how difficult developing an idea can be. This was an especially challenging project. It was difficult to find a way to clearly communicate each vice and virtue and make sure that the set worked as a whole.
So in my process I had to make sure that I had more ideas than one at hand and I had to be sure not to get attached to any one idea - because for whatever reason it would very likely have to go. However I realized that in developing several ideas simultaneously I was able to find a sprig of inspiration that could be used in another idea.

I also had to be sure to use a proper method of managing my files - and to for the sake of iteration and options to take more that one photograph of the same thing (in different ways):

PROJECT 3 process (PART 1)

VIRTUES AND VICES:

I begin the process - as per usual - by doing initial research on the subject. I did so by looking at many online sources (pictures and literature) and decide on going in one of four directions:
(NOTE THE SCREEN SHOT- THAT SHOWS EACH IDEA)

initial brainstorming

.I narrowed down my ideas to two thus ruling out ideas 3 and 4. Both the latter ideas seemed rather impractical and didn't seem to leave a lot of time and space for iterations and therefore not yielding a viable amount options that could be changed. Further more, legibility of the idea that I would attempt to communicate would be unclear.

.The first idea, being the fruit idea seemed the most viable because the images and the fruit itself is small enough to easily be manipulated in many ways.

.I developed my second idea a little simultaneously so as to be sure I had something else to fall back on, and also hoped that by doing so I would have ideas that I could apply to my other developing idea.

PROJECT II process:

.For this project I started out deciding who I might do. (a real and well known person who died before 1985). I thought about Charles Dickens, H.E. Bates, Hitler, Edith Piaf, etc. I finally decided upon Oscar Wilde.

.Research: 1. I read up on him and what he did. 2. I went online and found MANY images of him, people who knew him, old books of his, his grave in Paris, news paper articles, etc. - and put them in appropriate files.

__________

.I made paper on which to print.

___________

.Then took lots of photos and ended up with all the iterations that I got. Refer to other blog post http://josephshopen.blogspot.com/2010/02/blog-post.html
