furthering my questions

So, just to clarify, I am working with typography in space. With emphasis on motion.

_____
I did some extra research with motion typography in space: (they are ranked in order of physical and digital typography in space).

I have all my previous research on my blog: http://josephshopen.blogspot.com/

As i see it, the digital typography that you see in these could looked at as being physical typography in space. if that makes sense:

physical:

_____
These are the questions that I have come up with: I have made the distinction of physical or digital typography within each question

questions:

motion type in space:

.How could animating physical letterforms (with stop motion or any similar technique) in space give a simple narrative. kind of like this:

How could adding only subtle motion of the letterforms ad meaning to the typography.

.How would you read letterforms in space that moved themselves (with a motor or wind or something).

***How could the physical letterforms be perceived differently when the background image (not environment) behind them is periodically changed (the background image in this case would be moving).

—static type in space:
How can the light in the space effect the legibility of the typography.

How can I make an image of letterforms in space interact with the human form.

How can I make an image of digital letterforms believable in the space.

How could different environments effect the same physical letterforms.

***I've already been working on the starred one.

type lecture notes

lecture 4: legibility and readability

what exactly is legibility?

the degree to which a short burst of text - a headline, catalog listing, or stop sign - is instantly recognizable. - xhieght, san serif, looser tracking etc will make things more legible.

readable typefaces have contrast, simplicity and proportion.

_
the nature of letters:

to maintain recognition, letters retain structure with contrast.

the four letter groups:

il EFHILT
acegos COQS
bdfhjmnpqrtu DGJPRU
kvwxyz AKMNVWXYZ

obvious similarities within groups.

upper and lower halves are typically more legible than the lower halves. people tend to read the top half of the letters.

readers read best what they read most. (zuzana licko) the read better what they are most familiar with.

caps versus lower case - typeset in all caps affects readability and legibility more than any other factor. lower case letters have more distinct character because of their ascenders and descenders.

interletter and interword spacing. not too much, and not too little.

point sizes vary per typeface. 18pt baskerville is smaller than 18pt universe.

leading: ascenders and descenders should carry the eye easily from one line to the next.

need good contrast. not too thick, not too thin.

be careful with color and background. don't want too much vibration, or not enough contrast. also, similar qualities of color take away readability (the same saturation, the same color tone, etc)

typographic color: the overall color value of the text. letter, point size, stroke weight etc effect this.

paragraphs signal a change in thought. there are different ways to denote that.

jaggies - stair step pixelyness

anti-aliasing - smoothes edges of screen based type.

hinting - altering pixel mapping (or bitmap) to increase legibilty at various sizes on screen.

10 QUESTIONS

TEN QUESTIONS ABOUT MY TYPE RESEARCH. (SEE IN PREVIOUS POST)

1. HOW CAN I MAKE My type project INTERACTIVE?

2. SHOULD I MAKE IT A 3D TYPE IN REAL SPACE?

3. AND COULD IT SOMEHOW CHANGE FORM THUS MAKING IT TEMPORAL?

4. IF WHAT IM DOING IS ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP WITH TYPE AND IMAGE, AND I HAVE A 3D TYPEFACE IN SPACE, THEN WHERE DOES THE IMAGE COME INTO THE PICTURE? (ie DO I USE THE WALL AND FLOOR AS IMAGE, OR DO I MANIPULATE THE SPACE SOMEHOW?).

5. HOW SHOULD I CHOOSE WHICH MATERIAL TO MAKE, AND WHY I CHOSE THEM?

6. MAKING A TYPE IN MOTION USING TYPE TO BE SUPERIMPOSED ON AN IMAGE COULD BE INTERESTING!? WOULD IT BE TOO MUCH TO MAKE SUCH A MOTION PIECE INTERACTIVE SOMEHOW?*

7. SHOULD I JUST DO MOTION? — DOES IT HAVE TO BE INTERACTIVE? PERHAPS THE MOTION CAN BE ALMOST OBTRUSIVE IN THE SPACE (ie PROJECTION?) AND SO IT MIGHT BE IN SOME WAYS INTERFERED WITH...

8. WHAT TYPEFACE SHOULD I USE? I IMAGINE THAT WOULD DEPEND ON THE MESSAGE. SHOULD I MAKE MY OWN?

9. SHOULD I FOCUS A LOT ON THE MESSAGE, OR SHOULD I LET THE FORM DIRECT THE MESSAGE?

10. ARE THERE ANY AESTHETIC QUALITIES I SHOULD STRONGLY CONSIDER THAT MIGHT GUIDE ME — SHOULD I USE COLOR, SHOULD THE TYPEFACE BE LEGIBLE OR NO, SHOULD THE TYPEFACE BE PRETTY OR UGLY.

*A thought occurs: could use motion piece: a recording of the audience. then type is superimposed onto them. or they are superimposed onto a landscape with type.

THEN START TO ADDRESS (VISUALIZE) THE QUESTION THAT YOU THINK IS BEST.

TYPE RESEARCH part deux...

TYPOGRAPHY IN SPACE.

I would say that the typography that I found consists of mainly of digitally manipulated type within an image. I also found a few examples of physical typography that is photographed within a space which makes for a similar look.

What I am finding with my research is a pretty good diversity of imagery, typeface and subject matter. Interestingly enough though, it seems that many of the examples that I am finding is closely linked with the human form. Also, much of the typography is flat and vectored (naturally so as it is digital type that is superimposed on a photo).

All of the examples I found are done by professional artists and designers. However none of them seem to be of any typical commercial use. They tend to function mostly as an expressive art form — and very expressive they are too. In all of them there is a very good and meaningful relationship between the image and the typography. That is important because it reflects the values that have been developed within the field of graphic design — that is namely using typography itself in a unique and meaningful/appropriate way, and in addition to that, adding a second level of meaningful information with the imagery that the typography resides in. In all the examples, the message is compelling but what makes it more compelling is typography's relationship with the image, and how it exists within the image.

flash website process 2

I played much with the backgrounds and with the top navigation bar of the web page. these are various iterations before the final version.
I spent about 8 hours too many to find a way to take the pictures in the way that I needed. Alas, to no avail.
I ended up using the old photo that you see in this image for my background. which is actually very fitting. as it is a mid century photo of union station.

3 Public Service Announcement ideas

Questions:
1. why is this issue pertinent and timely?
2. what are its causes?
3. what are detrimental effects to individuals? to greater society?
4. what are preventative measures?
5. how does this issue relate to your sub-culture?
6. what organizations have a vested interest in this issue?
7. what organizations have a vested interest in your sub-culture?
8. what public service campaigns have previously addressed this issue?

____
____

ISSUE: people often make bad choices in terms of physical health, or neglect to exercise, or eat healthy which result in an unhealthy lifestyles.

1. why is this issue pertinent and timely? The issue is pertinent because many people - young and old - have unhealthy lifestyles through the lack of a healthy diet, not exercising because of a lack of time, or disinterested in remaining healthy.

2./3. CAUSES AND DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS: The leading cause of death in America is not heart disease, cancer, stroke or diabetes. It is the unhealthy lifestyle that most Americans are addicted to which is the true cause. A study by Mathew Reeves, a Michigan State University epidemiologist finds that only 3% of Americans maintain a healthy lifestyle. "It is a situation that is causing dire consequences for millions of Americans. I was really quite surprised at how low that number was," said Reeves, an assistant professor of epidemiology. (http://www.articlesbase.com/anti-aging-articles/americans-unhealthy-lifestyle-is-the-leading-cause-of-death-407805.html)
4. what are preventative measures? In order to prevent this issue, there may be ways to educate people: in order to have a healthy lifestyle, one should do the following: not smoke, healthy weight, eating right-including a minimum of 5 fruits/vegetables a day, exercising at least 5 times a week for 30 minutes. These 4 criteria is something you can easily choose to do.

(or the familial baby-boomer caregiver) about different things that are already at their disposal (or things that could become at their disposal) which would help them with their social or physical health. Many people of the baby boomer generation don't utilize the assets that are available online. There are different things such as social networks that may make it easier for them to stay in contact with people and plan events. there may be alternatives to socializing with different entertainment websites (ie netflix). Maybe there could be a site where caregivers can contact each other and share information or even swap places... there may also be an online source that gives ideas and ways that a caregiver may find time to exercise using certain techniques — or there may be just a site that giver certain tips on how to have a healthy life style when you have a busy life style. simple ways to get physical exercise or personal therapy.

5. pertinent to subculture:
-Two thirds of the adults in this country are either over weight or obese and it’s getting worse all the time.
-The familial baby boomer caregivers often work hard hours in the day and night taking care of their patient. Having such a time consuming job takes away time for their own interests such as their social life, or their physical health. Such a taxing job can detract from the caregiver's mental or physical health. It's an issue.
-Caregivers need time and ways to take care of their own health as well as their patient. If they don't, then that will result in poor caregiving which may lead to the decline of their patient's health. This might in turn lead to more reliance on additional help and financial strain on the caregiver and patient. The government might also have to supply more money to support such a cause if there is sever financial need.

6. what organizations have a vested interest in this issue? It is in the interest in the general health of the public to have a healthy lifestyle. So it is a topic that should interest government. An orgazation that is addressing the issue is National Cancer Institute.

7. What organizations have a vested interest in your sub-culture?:
-hartman group: http://www.hartman-group.com/hartbeat/bringing-up-baby-boomer

8. what public service campaigns have previously addressed this issue?
-philippine heart association: HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CAMPAIGN
PHA HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CAMPAIGN
-Public Health - Seattle & King County: Be Informed Be Healthy (http://www.kingcounty.gov/healthservices/health/nutrition/healthyeating/menu/campaign.aspx)

____
____

1. why is this issue pertinent and timely? With the economy crisis in effect, there may be incentives for people to save money by finding alternative ways of doing what they would need to buy — barter.

2. what are its causes? there is much speculation as to the cause of the economy crisis. But the main issue is how do we get out of it, and how do we make due with what we have while we are suffering from it.

3. detrimental effects to individuals and to the greater community:

4. what are preventative measures?

5. how does this issue relate to your sub-culture? the current struggle effects a lot of people. DIYers included. In addition to DIYers saving money by doing things themselves, they can network together to create a barter system.

6. what organizations have a vested interest in this issue? because of the nature of DIY, there aren't really any huge corporations that have a vested interest in this area.such ast the following:

.SwapAce is an organisation with the vision to be “the fun, unique, trusted marketplace, where millions worldwide interact”.

7. what organizations have a vested interest in your sub-culture? there are unions whereby diyers congregate in order to exchange assets.

8. what public service campaigns have previously addressed this issue? There are not any PSA for promoting diy bartering. But there are campaigns from diy groups that promote the idea.

____

____

Issue: lack of patient education on Overuse of medication, and why you are taking the medication.

1. why is this issue pertinent and timely? With so many different private companies who make medication, many people are not aware of all of the negative side effects that are caused by the medication - and on top of that, they often don't even know exactly WHY they are taking the medication. Doctors are quite frequently careless when giving medication according to this source.

2. what are its causes? Doctors are generally, regardless of his / her own convictions, is taught that the way to treat disease is to use drugs, often without even considering the underlying causes of the disease. examples from here: 1. High blood pressure (hypertension). Modern medicine uses various drugs to drop the blood pressure - without considering why the body had elevated it in the first place 2. Angina - Modern medicine uses drugs to "cover-up" the symptoms of angina and other forms of heart diease, without telling you you can actually reverse the damage that is causing it.

3. what are detrimental effects to individuals? to greater society? Because of dependence of patient to the doctor on the knowledge of medication, and why it is necessary, doctors can tend to be careless about what they are prescribing. Because the patient is not necessarily aware of all the reasons why they need the medication that is being prescribed to them, they are not able to question the doctor — there is no one really to keep the doctor in check. One is reliant on the doctor's own experience.

4. what are preventative measures? If a patient knows at least a little bit of what is going on in any procedure, they may be able to give educated questions to the doctor who is treating them. If there is more of a dialogue between the patient, or the patient's representative, and the doctor, then there may easily be less botch-ups later on. the patient should know more about what is going on, or they should at least have the option to.

5. how does this issue relate to your sub-culture? caregivers are often in contact with medication for their patients, or even themselves. If they are more educated about what medication is taken when and a little about why, they will be able to ask intelligent questions to the doctor. so there would be more of a collaboration in the treatment of a patient rather than a doctor telling you what is going to happen and you just accepting it without knowing whether it's right or wrong.

[a sidethoght: perhaps there could be a way for a patient to easily get a second or third opinion from another doctor without having to make an actual appointment with another doctor — which can be a hassle and cost time and money. perhaps the second doctor could tell you what questions to ask your doctor].
